How do I set up Wi-Fi using the Vodafone Mobile Broadband software?

Wi-Fi is a short range wireless connection that allows multiple users to share a connection to the internet.

Screenshot

Wi-Fi can be found in many locations: in the office; at home; or at public hotspots such as Cafés and Airports.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband allows you as a user to connect to Wi-Fi so as when you are in range of these Wi-Fi networks the software will automatically connect you and therefore allow you to save your mobile data usage allowance for when you are out and about.

When you install the Vodafone Mobile Broadband software any Wi-Fi connections that you have already connected to on your PC are automatically imported in to the Vodafone Mobile Broadband software as preferred Wi-Fi connections.

If you know there is a Wi-Fi connection available that you want to connect to, then use the following steps:

Go to the ADVANCED view Screenshot
Select the STATUS tab Screenshot
Click on the (x networks available) within the Wi-Fi panel Screenshot
A dialogue box will show the networks that are in range

If a network is already known it will be shown with a star
Screenshot
If you know the name of the network you want to connect to then select it and click on the connect button
The software will prompt for any security settings, if needed Screenshot

Once connected, this network will become a preferred network and will connect automatically in the future.

If you do not know the name of the network you want to connect to there are actions you can take:

  • If it is a public Wi-Fi hotspot(café or airport) then the network details and costs should be available from the counter or information booth at that location;
  • If it is an office Wi-Fi then you should contact your IT support for connection and security details;
  • If it is Wi-Fi at home, then a simple approach is to locate your Wi-Fi router it may look like . Put your PC near the router, switch off the router and make a note of which connection disappears. Switch the router back on then connect to this network.
  • Once complete return to the STANDARD view

When Vodafone Always Best Connected is enabled, the Vodafone Mobile Broadband application can:

  • Open Mobile, Wi-Fi and LAN connections
  • Check that the local connection, eg. a Wi-Fi, actually has access to the internet, and switch to another connection if the internet cannot be reached.
  • Switch between Mobile, Wi-Fi and LAN connections, based on defined priorities, to ensure the best connection is always used.
  • Take account of what applications are being used before switching connections, eg. avoid disrupting a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or secure connection because a better connection has become available.
  • If Vodafone Always Best Connected is being used within a corporate network, it can check if the corporate network can be reached directly, and if not, start a VPN program when required

Vodafone Always Best Connected can be included in both Vodafone Mobile Broadband Lite and Vodafone Mobile Broadband Full software versions, and is also available on the Mac OS X versions of the client.
